We regularly meet business owners convinced their ads "aren't working" — good click-through rate, reasonable cost per click, healthy reach — but almost no actual sales or bookings coming through. In most of these cases, the ads are doing exactly what they're supposed to do. The problem is on the other side of the click.
Traffic isn't the bottleneck — conversion is
If your cost per click is in a normal range for your industry but your conversion rate is low, the issue almost never lives in the ad itself. It lives on the page that click lands on. This is one of the most under-used levers in advertising: a landing page conversion rate improvement from 2% to 3% can lift your overall return on ad spend by roughly 50%, without touching your ad budget or targeting at all.
The most common landing page mistakes
1. Sending traffic to your homepage
A homepage is built to serve many different visitors with many different intents. Someone who clicked a specific ad about a specific offer has one intent — and if they land on a general homepage, they have to do the work of finding what they came for. Every extra click or scroll required is a chance to lose them. A dedicated landing page built around the exact offer in the ad will consistently outperform a homepage redirect.
2. Message mismatch
If your ad promises "20% off your first order" and the landing page doesn't mention that offer anywhere above the fold, visitors experience a jarring disconnect — and many will simply leave, unsure if they're even in the right place. The headline, offer, and visual style of your landing page should feel like a direct continuation of the ad, not a different experience entirely.
3. Slow load times
Mobile users — the majority of ad traffic for most businesses — are especially unforgiving of slow-loading pages. Every additional second of load time is an opportunity for someone to back out before the page even finishes rendering. Heavy, unoptimised images are the most common culprit.
4. Too many decisions, not enough clarity
A landing page with five different links, three competing calls-to-action, and a navigation menu pulling attention in different directions dilutes the one action you actually want the visitor to take. High-converting landing pages are ruthlessly focused — one offer, one clear next step, minimal distraction.
5. No trust signals
A first-time visitor arriving from an ad doesn't know your business yet. Testimonials, client logos, reviews, credentials, or simple proof points (client count, years in business) do real work in the seconds before someone decides whether to trust you enough to hand over their details or their money.
6. A weak or buried call-to-action
If a visitor has to scroll and search to figure out how to actually take the next step — book a call, buy, sign up — you're losing people who were genuinely interested but didn't want to work for it. The call-to-action should be visible, repeated at logical points down the page, and unambiguous about what happens next.
How to diagnose your own page
Compare your cost per click and click-through rate against typical benchmarks for your industry. If those numbers look normal but your conversion rate (the percentage of clicks that turn into a sale, booking, or lead) is noticeably below what's typical for your category, the fix isn't a bigger ad budget — it's a better page. Run this quick check:
- Does the page load in under 3 seconds on mobile?
- Is the offer from the ad visible within the first screen, with no scrolling?
- Is there exactly one clear call-to-action, repeated down the page?
- Is there at least one visible trust signal (testimonial, review, credential)?
- Could a first-time visitor understand what you're offering in five seconds?
The takeaway
Before increasing ad spend to "fix" underwhelming results, audit the page the ads are sending people to. In most underperforming campaigns we've reviewed, the traffic is fine — the conversion path is what's leaking. Fixing the page is almost always cheaper, faster, and more reliable than trying to out-spend a broken funnel.
